Walking through our doors for your first SPRAVATO® session represents an important step toward reclaiming your mental wellness. At NuLife Health, we recognize the courage it takes to pursue innovative treatment options when traditional antidepressants haven’t provided adequate relief. SPRAVATO®, the FDA-approved esketamine nasal spray, offers new hope for treatment-resistant depression, and we’re committed to making your initial experience as comfortable and informative as possible. Our clinical team has extensive experience administering this groundbreaking medication, having helped numerous patients throughout Belleville, NJ and surrounding areas find relief from persistent depressive symptoms that have impacted their quality of life.
The journey toward healing begins with understanding, and we believe informed patients experience better outcomes. Our comprehensive approach ensures you’re fully prepared for what lies ahead, from the moment you arrive at our welcoming and professional facility to the completion of your post-treatment observation period. We maintain a safe and professional environment where high-quality customer service and patient care remain our top priorities throughout every interaction.
Pre-Treatment Preparation and Requirements
Before your scheduled appointment, certain preparations will optimize your treatment experience and ensure your safety. You’ll need to arrange transportation, as driving is prohibited for the remainder of the day following SPRAVATO® administration. Our clinic offers car services for patients who need assistance with transportation arrangements, demonstrating our commitment to whole wellness for our patients. We recommend eating a light meal approximately two hours before your appointment, as some patients experience mild nausea when taking SPRAVATO® on an empty stomach. Avoid food and liquids for at least 60 minutes before treatment to prevent interference with medication absorption.
Your medical team will have already reviewed your comprehensive health history, current medications, and treatment goals during your initial consultation. However, please inform us immediately if anything has changed regarding your health status, medications, or if you’ve experienced any concerning symptoms since your last visit. This ongoing communication helps us maintain the clinical excellence we’re known for, ensuring your treatment plan remains optimized for your specific needs. Bring any prescribed medications you typically take, comfortable clothing, and perhaps some calming music or reading material for the observation period.
The Treatment Process Step by Step
Upon arrival, our clinical staff will check your vital signs, including blood pressure and heart rate, establishing baseline measurements for comparison throughout your session. You’ll be escorted to a comfortable treatment room designed to promote relaxation and healing. The actual administration process involves using the SPRAVATO® nasal spray device under direct medical supervision. Depending on the appropriate dose, patients can expect to use 2 or 3 devices on a treatment day. Additionally, we will provide patients with an eye mask, noise-cancelling headphones, and a comfortable plush blanket for patients to relax after medication administration.
Our trained healthcare provider will demonstrate proper administration technique, ensuring you understand how to position the device and coordinate breathing for optimal absorption. Between each spray, you’ll wait five minutes, allowing the medication to be properly absorbed through the nasal mucosa. The entire administration process typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes, though we never rush patients who need additional time or support. Throughout this process, our staff remains present, monitoring your response and providing reassurance as needed.
During Treatment Sensations and Experiences
- Dissociative effects: Many patients report feeling disconnected from their surroundings or experiencing altered perceptions of time and space
- Sensory changes: Colors may appear more vivid, sounds might seem distant or enhanced, and physical sensations can feel different than usual
- Emotional shifts: Some experience emotional release, increased introspection, or temporary mood elevation during the session
These effects typically begin within 15 to 30 minutes after administration and generally peak around 40 minutes. Our experienced staff understands these are normal responses to SPRAVATO® and will help you navigate any unexpected sensations. We maintain a calm, supportive atmosphere throughout, adjusting lighting and environmental factors to enhance your comfort. Some patients find the experience profound and therapeutic, while others describe it as simply relaxing or mildly unusual.
Post-Treatment Monitoring and Recovery
Following administration, you’ll remain in our facility for a mandatory two-hour observation period. This isn’t merely a regulatory requirement but an essential safety measure that allows our medical team to monitor your vital signs and ensure you’re recovering appropriately. During this time, you’ll rest comfortably while our staff performs periodic checks, measuring blood pressure and assessing your overall wellbeing. Most dissociative effects substantially diminish within the first hour, though some patients report feeling slightly different for several hours afterward.
We encourage patients to use this recovery time for gentle reflection or rest. Many find journaling helpful for processing their experience, and we can provide materials if desired. Our staff remains available to discuss any concerns or observations you’d like to share, as these insights often prove valuable for optimizing future sessions and supporting your ongoing mental health journey.
