Understanding Ketamine Therapy for Mental Health Treatment

At NuLife Health, we specialize in providing innovative ketamine infusion therapy for patients struggling with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and chronic pain conditions. Ketamine represents a breakthrough in mental health treatment, offering hope to individuals who haven’t found relief through traditional medications or therapy approaches. Our clinical protocols utilize sub-anesthetic doses of ketamine administered intravenously under careful medical supervision, creating a controlled therapeutic environment where healing can begin.

The mechanism behind ketamine’s effectiveness differs fundamentally from conventional antidepressants. While traditional medications target serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine systems and can take weeks to show effects, ketamine works on the brain’s glutamate system, specifically blocking NMDA receptors. This action triggers a cascade of changes that promote neuroplasticity, essentially helping the brain form new neural connections and pathways. Many patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms within hours or days of treatment, rather than the typical four to six weeks required for standard antidepressants.

Our Comprehensive Treatment Approach

We believe in treating the whole person, not just symptoms. Our comprehensive approach begins with an extensive initial evaluation where we review your medical history, current medications, previous treatment attempts, and specific mental health challenges. This thorough assessment allows us to determine if ketamine therapy aligns with your needs and develop a personalized treatment protocol tailored to your unique situation. We maintain a safe and professional environment throughout every step of your journey, ensuring you feel supported and comfortable during each visit.

Our treatment protocols typically involve a series of six initial infusions administered over two to three weeks, followed by maintenance sessions as needed. Each infusion session lasts approximately 40 to 60 minutes, during which patients remain conscious but experience a dissociative state that many describe as deeply relaxing or meditative. Our medical team monitors vital signs continuously throughout the infusion, adjusting dosages based on individual response and tolerance. Following each session, patients rest in our recovery area until fully alert, and we provide car services for patients to ensure safe transportation home.

Clinical Excellence and Safety Standards

Patient safety remains our paramount concern at NuLife Health. We adhere to strict medical protocols and maintain rigorous safety oversight throughout every treatment. Before beginning therapy, we conduct comprehensive medical screenings to identify any contraindications or risk factors. Our clinical team consists of experienced medical professionals trained specifically in ketamine administration and mental health care. We continuously update our protocols based on the latest research and evidence-based practices in ketamine therapy.

Our facility meets all regulatory requirements for ketamine administration, with emergency equipment readily available and staff trained in advanced life support techniques. We maintain detailed treatment records and closely track patient progress using validated assessment tools. This data-driven approach allows us to optimize treatment plans and ensure each patient receives the most effective care possible. Our commitment to transparency means we thoroughly explain potential side effects, which typically include mild dissociation during infusion, temporary elevation in blood pressure, and occasional nausea, all of which we actively manage and monitor.

Integration and Long-Term Wellness Support

Successful mental health treatment extends beyond the infusion room. We emphasize the importance of integration work to maximize and sustain the benefits of ketamine therapy. Our team provides guidance on incorporating insights gained during treatment into daily life, recommending complementary therapies such as psychotherapy, mindfulness practices, and lifestyle modifications that support ongoing mental wellness. We view ketamine as a catalyst for change rather than a standalone solution, empowering patients to build lasting resilience and improved quality of life.

Who Benefits from Ketamine Treatment

Ketamine therapy offers particular promise for individuals experiencing:

  • Treatment-resistant depression: patients who haven’t responded adequately to multiple antidepressant trials
  • Severe anxiety disorders: including generalized anxiety and social anxiety that significantly impairs daily functioning
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder: especially cases where traditional therapies haven’t provided sufficient relief
  • Chronic pain conditions: including fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome
  • Suicidal ideation: ketamine’s rapid action can provide crucial relief during mental health crises

Research indicates that approximately 70% of patients with treatment-resistant depression experience significant improvement with ketamine therapy. Our welcoming and professional environment ensures every patient receives high-quality customer service and patient care throughout their treatment journey. We understand that seeking mental health treatment requires courage, and we honor that bravery by providing compassionate, respectful care that addresses both immediate symptoms and long-term wellness goals.

Understanding Ketamine Therapy
Frequently Asked Questions

There’s a good chance you’ve heard of ketamine as a recreational substance, but its medicinal value far outweighs its party persona. For decades, ketamine has been a FDA-approved anesthetic. But it has also been proven to effectively treat symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Ketamine is safe when it is administered under the guidance of certified medical professionals. Physicians in operating rooms actually tend to favor ketamine over other anesthetics because of its low side effect profile—which is especially necessary for patients with low blood pressure and respiratory issues. Your IV ketamine treatment will be administered at an even lower dose than what is used as an anesthetic in operating rooms. Our clinic always uses the safest dosing regimen and closely monitor patients in a controlled setting to ensure maximum safety

Most insurance companies cover SPRAVATO® for treatment-resistant depression so contact us to see if you are covered. Please contact us for questions about IV ketamine pricing.

Absolutely. We know that people’s financial situations vary, and we do not want a fear of financial burden to keep you from healing. Our team is here to work with you to create a financing plan that fits your needs. Call or email us to discuss financing eligibility.

SPRAVATO® nasal esketamine spray is covered by most insurance plans for treatment-resistant depression. Most insurance companies do not currently cover ketamine for depression. We are hopeful that this will change as more published research continues to prove the efficacy of this treatment.

Yes! How you choose to care for yourself is completely up to you, but we highly encourage people to continue seeing a talk therapist or psychiatrist once they’ve started ketamine treatment. Working with a talk therapist may help you to unpack any breakthroughs you experience during a ketamine journey.

Our team prefers to receive referrals before beginning treatment, but they are not required. We find that we are able to help people achieve the best results when we are able to work with a mental health provider to better understand your history, and develop a post-treatment plan. If you are not currently seeing a psychotherapist or psychiatrist, our physicians will perform a medical and psychiatric history screening. Additionally, we can assist you with a referral to work with a ketamine-assisted psychotherapist in our expansive network.

During your initial consultation, we will review your medical history and symptoms to determine if ketamine is safe for you. Absolute contraindications to ketamine treatment include hypersensitivity/severe allergy to ketamine, active psychosis/mania, severe coronary artery disease, pregnancy and breastfeeding, uncontrolled hypertension, recent myocardial infarction, and intracranial aneurysms. Unfortunately, we also do not treat pediatric patients under the age of 18 at this time.

The following are relative contraindications that will be weighed on a case-by-case basis:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Respiratory issues due to weight
  • Medication risks (benzodiazepines, opioids)
  • Active substance use
  • Personality disorders
  • Acute suicidal ideation
  • Past substance abuse disorder
  • Mild to moderate hypertension
  • History of epilepsy
  • Liver disease

There may be other conditions or reasons that patients might not be candidates for ketamine treatment.

Side effects from IV ketamine treatments are rare, and we conduct thorough medical pre-screenings to mitigate any chances of you feeling discomfort post-treatment. But every body is different. While most people walk away from ketamine treatment feeling relaxed and comfortable, some do report feelings of dizziness, elevated heart rate, nausea, hallucinations, and increased blood pressure. During treatment our certified physicians are always close by to monitor—don’t hesitate to let them know if you have any issues.

Ketamine is regulated by the FDA and legal for medical use in the United States when administered by certified medical providers.

Ketamine challenges the breakdown in the brain’s information synthesis capability by resetting brain structures and creating new neural connections. Patients can often achieve positive effects within hours to days from ketamine treatment. Traditional antidepressant medications usually require weeks of treatment prior to seeing effects.

We always recommend discussing dosage changes or continuation with your psychiatrist. But it is safe to continue taking antidepressants once you’ve begun ketamine treatment, as ketamine does not interact with the majority of antidepressant medications. Although it is safe to continue, many people actually are able to lower their antidepressant dosage following ketamine therapy.
